A Phenomenological Study on the Caring Experiences of Those Who have a Spouse with Mood Disorders

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find a social welfare implication by understanding a meaning and nature about the experience of a spouse`s caring for a person with mood disorder. In this study, the research question is `what is an experience of caring for a person of spouse with mood disorder?`. The participants of this study consists of 8 males and females who have a common experience which their spouses are suffering from bipolar disorder and depression with Giorgi`s phenomenological research method. The data was collected from July in 2015 to February in 2016. In the result of this study, the words of situational semantic structure with time were described as `confusion`, `hardship`, and `stepping forward`. In this process, the participants experienced `stepping forward` as time passed. The category of the participants` caring experience were `embarrassing`, `feelings of disconnection from the world`, `life which is out of one`s own place`, `being at the end of a rope`, `life that you want to give up`, `the power that strengthen the relationship`, `finding a way to make living together`. In conclusion, the nature of the experience of caring for the spouse with mood disorder can be that `they make a recovery of the relationship by caring their spouses continuously even in the confusion`. It`s important that this study`s implications is presented to need on recognition and intervention of social welfare for the spouses of the people with mood disorder and the basis that the community mental health service area can be expanded to a main caregiver in the future.
